J-PAL’s online courses were developed to make our training materials available to a worldwide audience.
Online courses are hosted on MITx and run in regular intervals. Past course instances are archived and can be accessed outside the regular course cycle.
J-PAL offers an interactive online version of its in-person Executive Education course. This is a self-paced course that covers the same material as the conventional on-site version and is hosted on MIT’s edX platform. It takes approximately five weeks to complete. Travel with our team to India and Kenya to see first-hand how rigorous health research is conducted in the field. This nine-week course focuses on the fundamentals of field-based health research with an emphasis on measuring health outcomes in low resource settings. The course showcases real world examples from on-going research studies in India and Kenya, combined with exercises to provide practical insights about study design, measurement of health outcomes and data collection, as well as common challenges and constraints in implementing health surveys in the field. Through a series of integrated learning modules, the course covers topics such as:
- Measuring individual and population health
- Selecting health indicators,
- Measurement tools and selection,
- Questionnaire development, and
- Ethical issues.
Case Studies and exercises are drawn from research conducted by J-PAL affiliated professors.
J-PAL 350x is designed for managers and researchers at international development organizations, foundations, governments, and non-governmental organizations from a variety of backgrounds, including those who are new to health research. The course is available free of cost, except for a small fee for an (optional) certificate of completion.

The J-PAL/MITx MicroMasters in Data, Economics, and Development Policy (DEDP)
The DEDP MicroMasters, a collaboration of J-PAL Global's Education team, MIT Economics, and MITx, is a rigorous academic program that combines online instruction with in-person course exams that lead to the MicroMasters credential. Course fees cover the exams administered in Pearson testing centers around the world. The five MicroMasters online courses cover topics in economics, econometrics, development, and policy. They are offered three times a year and can be taken individually without enrolling in the full program or taking the exams.
